Neuromancer walkthrough. Part I: The Comlink world. At various points, it is necessary to use the PAX system to read messages. Due to the timing of each game, PAX messages may not appear at the times noted here. 1. Wake up at Ratz'. Use PAX. Always download all credits (this prevents paying fines when arrested, but runs the risk of Chin the body part shop getting all the credits when dying --- so don't die). Note your BAMA ID: 056306118. Read all messages, and note the following. * Matt Shaw gives advice (this will repeat later). * FFargo says you owe 2000 credits (this can be ignored). * Shin says to pick up the deck. * Crazy Edo says to trade caviar for software. * Matt Shaw again provides the following link codes: Asano Computing: ASANOCOMP Cheap Hotel: CHEAPO Regular Fellows: REGFELLOW Consumer Review: CONSUMEREV World Chess Federation: WORLDCHESS * Bosch says Shiva at the Gentleman Loser has your cryptology chip. * Armitage says to answer with BAMA ID for 10k credits, do so. * Hitachi says there is an experiment opportunity (that's a device to get in the company office area, but the experiment itself is not a good idea because it will lower your top composition to 1850). After you send the message to Armitage, you will get 10k credits. Download all such credits. If you go through the other materials, you will see that the son of Fuji's president has gone missing. Also, there is this general sense that something bad is happening in cyberspace (here, "cowboys" translates loosely to "hackers" or perhaps "crackers"). Note these for later. Go through the talk scripts with Ratz, you will hear one of Lonny Zone's girls is looking for you, and that Shin has your deck. Note these for later. Pay Ratz (you will have to discuss delaying payment first before the Give option appears for the credits), then leave. 2. Walk around, see this map of Chiba City. Ratz/Chatsubo Body Shop Microsofts Massage Parlor Donut World Shin's Cheap Hotel Gentleman Loser Maas Biolabs Julius Deane Space Port And, from the Cheap Hotel, House of Pong Asano Cheap Hotel Lonny Girl Metal Holografix Crazy Edo (maybe) And, from Crazy Edo, Crazo Edo Matrix Decrepit building Hi-tech gate Restaurant If you encounter Lonny's Girl, ask her about the following topics and note: * justice => link code is JUSTICE * hitachi => a word to remember, GENESPLICE Some other topics you may consider for amusement: massage, software, lonny, zone, cyberspace, matrix, and where various things in town are (like the cheap hotel). To ask questions, ask why she's asking, then choose the prompt to ask questions. Beyond the hi-tech gate are the offices of the hi-tech companies. These will be visited later. 3. Get deck from Shin. First ask why, then say you don't have cash. Shin will return the deck for free, and slam the door shut. Discard the pawn ticket. 4. Go to the Gentleman Loser. Ask Shiva for the chip, get chip (you will have to be tactful around Shiva). Generally, operate all chips obtained, doing so will implant the chip and so the chip becomes a skill that can be used. Note she also has Hardware Repair, get that (ask for CHIP). Use the Hardware Repair skill to fix the UXB board. While there, use the PAX and check for news and messages. You may have to wait until the date in the game moves enough to the future for these to appear. In this case, the following information shows up on 11/17/58 (the game starts on 11/16/58). In the Amiga version of the game, you can tell when the date changes because the game plays music for you. So, on to the messages for 11/17/58. Note NASA and Fuji are doing business, and that Fuji's president son has been returned, "in one piece, more or less". There is a new message from Emp. Norton: Shiva has a pass for the Matrix Restaurant. A message from CFM mentions the following code, ?, FREEMATRIX, with password CFM. But note the odd phrasing at the end. Another message notes the link code for the IRS as IRS, link code IRS, password TAXINFO. Another message from Bosch about meeting at Gridpoint. The daily news mentions others were shocked at your sleeping on the spaghetti earlier. From time to time you will see interesting characterizations of your activities in the news. Ask Shiva for the pass. 5. At this point, it's time to start connecting to bases. So far, there are: Asano Computing: ASANOCOMP Cheap Hotel: CHEAPO ?: FREEMATRIX, CFM Consumer Review: CONSUMEREV IRS: IRS, TAXINFO Justice: JUSTICE Regular Fellows: REGFELLOW World Chess Federation: WORLDCHESS Use the UXB, select Comlink, and connect to Regular Fellows. Note the new password, VISITOR, and that you are cleared for level 1. These bases have levels. So, now there is: Regular Fellows: REGFELLOW, VISITOR Go to the gallery, and find an email from Matt Shaw re: chess tournaments at WORLDCHESS and the program he uploded. Another email from Harpo notes the password for level 2 at Cheap Hotel is COCKROACH. Cheap Hotel: CHEAPO, ?, COCKROACH Another email from Matt Shaw notes the level 2 password for Asano's is PANCAKE, but it's encoded. Use Cryptology to decode #PANCAKE to VENDORS. So, Asano Computing: ASANOCOMP, ?, #PANCAKE>VENDORS Note the suggestion in the emails that link codes (and other information) for Japanese companies can be obtained from Julius Deane. Another email, from Deathangel's Shadow, notes that ICE is smarter and that each time you use a ware against it, it does less damage --- so keep multiple warez. From the checkout counter, get BattleChess 2.0. Scout just tells you how many levels a base has when you use it on the connection screen, but really you will see this information is a tad pointless. Use the UXB, connect to the World Chess Federation. Use password NOVICE as instructed. World Chess Federation: WORLDCHESS, NOVICE Get a full membership and play two tournaments by uploading BattleChess 2.0. This earns some money in the net. Observe the tournaments are held daily, so presumably you can win some more money when the date changes (quick experiments show this is false even if you get new memberships). Note the general indication of Morphy apparently being findable, this is a clue for later. After this, delete BattleChess 2.0 (you can always get it again later if you really want it). World Chess Federation: WORLDCHESS, NOVICE, MEMBER Use the UXB, connect to the Cheap Hotel, use password COCKROACH. Cheap Hotel: CHEAPO, GUEST, COCKROACH Edit your bill by setting the On Account money to 1000. Buy caviar from room service, edit the bill again to settle it. Do not actually pay the bill, of course. You will be amused to find that Paul Stack, the owner of the Cheap Hotel, appears in the news being surprised that you have paid the bill. Looking through the local things to do, note the ad for Psychologist: Psychologist: PSYCHO, ? So now, there are: Asano Computing: ASANOCOMP, ?, #PANCAKE>VENDORS Cheap Hotel: CHEAPO, GUEST, COCKROACH ?: FREEMATRIX, CFM Consumer Review: CONSUMEREV IRS: IRS, TAXINFO Justice: JUSTICE Psychologist: PSYCHO, ? Regular Fellows: REGFELLOW, VISITOR World Chess Federation: WORLDCHESS, NOVICE, MEMBER 6. Go to the Cheap Hotel, get the Caviar, go to Crazy Edo's, exchange caviar for Comlink 2.0, delete Comlink 1.0 from UXB. 7. Go to the House of Pong, and pretend to be interested in the Holy Game. You will see they need a joystick. Go to Metal Holografix, ask for and buy a joystick, go back to the House of Pong, and give the joystick in exchange for Zen and Sophistry (note you can get each multiple times, it is unclear how this could be an advantage). By the way, for some reason you can ask Finn at Metal Holografix for a scan. He reports there are no implants or biologicals. Perhaps Finn would report otherwise if you did the lung experiment you should not do, or later because of the Cyber Eyes (more on this later). It is unclear why you would want to tell Finn that his head was designed in a wind tunnel. 8. Go to the Massage Parlor, and buy information twice. You will get arrested each time, do not pay the lawyer because it's a scam. Since there's no money in your BAMA account, effectively you won't pay the fines. Ignore the Compu-Judge admonition not to leave Chiba City. Note: Panthern Moderns: CHAOS, MAINLINE Bank of Zurich: BOZOBANK, ? Note that the banking center is on the Freeside orbital colony. The PAX news will have some misleading account of what actually happened at the Massage Parlor. Incidentally, in some cracked versions of the game, you never get arrested for sending the message to Armitage. This matters because the fourth time you get arrested, the sentence is not a fine but death and then you appear at the body shop with no money. So, do not ask for information more than twice (besides, from the third time on, the information given is a generally useless comment). 9. Go to the Gentleman Loser, use the UXB, and connect to the Panther Moderns. Use the password, MAINLINE, then browse the message board. Note: * connecting to Hosaka with "FUNGEKI" using Comlink 5.0, and adding yourself to the employee roster gets you money --- this will have to be pursued later. * Julius Deane knows cryptology and also has chips. * Screaming Fist has EasyRider 1.0, which allows crossing zones without having to go to a different jack. This will be explained later. * Lupus talks about SENSE/NET, and that meetings are to be had in person. This will be explained later. * Larry Moe says no wilson ("loser") will get past to the meeting room, that he has CopTalk, and that Lupus has Evasion. * Modern Bob says he has codes available if he receives a message. * Lupus receives a message re: burning Gemeinschaft. * A message from Matt Shaw suggesting to start connecting to cyberspace from the Cheap Hotel rather than from the Gentleman Loser. Send a message to Modern Bob re: Hitachi. Then check messages, and you will see that: Hitachi: HITACHIBIO SEA: SOFTEN From the software library, get Comlink 3.0. Disconnect. Delete Comlink 2.0 from the UXB. 10. Log in to PAX, look at the messages. Note the mention of Kuang Eleven. Also, Crazy Edo apparently has a Samurai Seven handy. You will have to wait until 11/18/58 to see this. 11. Go to Larry's Microsofts. Ask for chip, buy CopTalk. 12. Go to Donut World. Use the CopTalk chip to start a conversation, then discover the following bits of information. Chiba Tactical Police: KEISATSU Software Enforcement Agency (SEA): SOFTEN, #SMEEGLDIPO Fuji: ?, #ABURAKKOI Incidentally, if you use CopTalk with Lonny Zone's girl on the street, she will not fall for it. 13. Go to Julius Deane, ask for upgrade and upgrade Cryptology twice. Then, decode #ABURAKKOI and #SMEEGLDIPO. In total, the link numbers and passwords so far is this. Asano Computing: ASANOCOMP, ?, #PANCAKE>VENDORS Bank of Zurich: BOZOBANK, ? Cheap Hotel: CHEAPO, GUEST, COCKROACH Chiba Tactical Police: KEISATSU ?: FREEMATRIX, CFM Consumer Review: CONSUMEREV Fuji: ?, #ABURAKKOI>UCHIKATSU Hitachi: HITACHIBIO Hosaka: ?, ?FUNGEKI? IRS: IRS, TAXINFO Justice: JUSTICE Panthern Moderns: CHAOS, MAINLINE Psychologist: PSYCHO, ? Regular Fellows: REGFELLOW, VISITOR Software Enforcement Agency (SEA): SOFTEN, #SMEEGLDIPO>PERMAFROST World Chess Federation: WORLDCHESS, NOVICE, MEMBER 14. From the Gentleman Loser, use the UXB and connect to the Software Enforcement Agency. In the supervisor memo, note the availablity of a CopTalk upgrade, as well as some software that may be available. Download Comlink 4.0 and Sequencer 1.0 (Sequencer will fill in passwords that are not known from the connect screen, as well as proceed with login when there is no password). Note that Fargo Fergus has an arrest warrant (although this is inconsequential, it is perhaps an explanation as to why the debt to FFergus isn't a concern). The emails here are just a demonstration of the inhumanity of the system as a whole. Upgrade to CopTalk level 2. Disconnect, then delete Comlink 3.0. Incidentally, if you use CopTalk level 2 with Lonny Zone's girl on the street, she will fall for it but tell you she's a good friend of the police chief. 15. With the new CopTalk, go to Donut World and select the same greeting for the cop. This time he will answer differently. Ask him where the little people get their warez, and he will answer that he spoke to Shiva about the Gentleman Loser DB. 16. Go back to the Gentleman Loser and ask Shiva about the Gentleman Loser. She will provide the link code. Gentleman Loser: LOSER, WILSON 17. Use the UXB and connect to the Gentleman Loser. Through the messages, note new link codes: Bank Gemeinschaft: BANKGEMEIN Eastern Seaboard: EASTSEABOD Note also the comment that Lupus Yonderboy from the Panther Moderns is burning the banks, so make a note of asking Lupus about that. There's also a mention that Crazy Edo has a Samurai Seven on the cheap, but there does not appear to be a way to talk to him about it. In fact, a PAX message from 11/19/58 will reveal he sold it to someone else leaving the original buyer at a loss. 18. Use the UXB to connect to the Eastern Seaboard, using Sequencer to get through the password screen (you have to use Sequencer from your inventory before you get to the actual password screen). Eastern Seaboard: EASTSEABOD, LONGISLAND From the company news, note the existence of the Free Sex Union. From the software library, download Comlink 5.0. Go through the messages, eventually you will see that cowboy messages have been grafted onto the official channel. However, read all the messages. First, note that inspector Boggs has an allowance authorized with code ABAGATUR at Bank Gemeinschaft. Note also a message directed to you re: Citizens for a Free Matrix running a trojan horse operation. Here there is confirmation that indeed, the CFM access codes are as below. Citizens for a Free Matrix: FREEMATRIX, CFM Another message notes the Gentleman Loser DB, and this time provide a new password: Gentleman Loser: LOSER, WILSON, LOSER Disconnect, and delete Comlink 4.0. 19. Connect to Gentleman Loser, this time using the LOSER password. Note the higher level message board. In there, you will note a message from Matt Shaw noting that Blammo will put your eye out. Another email notes that going after Bank Gemeinschaft should be easier using EINHOVEN. Use Cryptology to find that #EINHOVEN>VERBOTEN. In the software library, you will see some programs, but there is no need to get them just yet. Start a catalog nevertheless: BlowTorch 1.0: Gentleman Loser Hammer 1.0: Gentleman Loser Probe 3.0: Gentleman Loser Note the continuing worry that cowboys are disappearing. 20. Use the UXB to connect to the Chiba Tactical Police, using Sequencer to determine the password. Hence, one finds the following. Chiba Tactical Police: KEISATSU, WARRANTS Besides some BAMAs, there is nothing of interest there. 21. So far, the link code catalog is: Asano Computing: ASANOCOMP, ?, #PANCAKE>VENDORS Bank Gemeinschaft: BANKGEMEIN, ?, #EINHOVEN>VERBOTEN Bank of Zurich: BOZOBANK, ? Cheap Hotel: CHEAPO, GUEST, COCKROACH Chiba Tactical Police: KEISATSU, WARRANTS Citizens for a Free Matrix: FREEMATRIX, CFM Consumer Review: CONSUMEREV Eastern Seaboard: EASTSEABOD, LONGISLAND Fuji: ?, #ABURAKKOI>UCHIKATSU Gentleman Loser: LOSER, WILSON, LOSER Hitachi: HITACHIBIO Hosaka: ?, ?FUNGEKI? IRS: IRS, TAXINFO Justice: JUSTICE Panthern Moderns: CHAOS, MAINLINE Psychologist: PSYCHO, ? Regular Fellows: REGFELLOW, VISITOR Software Enforcement Agency (SEA): SOFTEN, #SMEEGLDIPO>PERMAFROST World Chess Federation: WORLDCHESS, NOVICE, MEMBER 22. Use the UXB to connect to the IRS. The message board does not have much of interest, except perhaps Lonny Zone's BAMA, 1404726431. 23. Go see Julius Deane. Ask about Hosaka (#VULCAN), Fuji (#DUMBO), Hitachi (GENESPLICE). Decoding the passwords yields Hosaka: ?, #VULCAN>BIOSOFT Fuji: ?, #DUMBO>ROMCARDS, #ABURAKKOI>UCHIKATSU 24. Back at the Gentleman Loser, connect to Hitachi, use Sequencer and find that the password is indeed what Julius Deane and Lonny Zone's girl said, GENESPLICE. Hitachi: HITACHIBIO, GENESPLICE There is a lung report that claims a new synthetic lung improves performance. There is also the lung experiment going on at Hitachi, alas it does not help because as noted earlier your composition will drop to 1850 from 2000. 25. Connect to Asano Computing, and note the following vendor link codes. Asano Computing: ASANOCOMP, CUSTOMER, #PANCAKE>VENDORS Fuji: FUJI, #DUMBO>ROMCARDS, #ABURAKKOI>UCHIKATSU Hosaka: HOSAKACORP, #VULCAN>BIOSOFT, ?FUNGEKI? Musabori Industries: MUSABORIND 26. Connect to Fuji, using UCHIKATSU (Sequencer would find ROMCARDS here). Note this yields level 2 access. From the company news, note Larry Moe has been hired as a consultant. From the press releases, note a new code: NASA: VOYAGER From the personnel management, note Larry Moe's BAMA is 062788138. From the memo, note that indeed Harry Watkins is Fuji's president, and his son was kidnapped by the people of TOZOKU. 27. Connect to Hosaka, and note the password FUNGEKI yields level 2 access. Hosaka: HOSAKACORP, BIOSOFT, FUNGEKI From the memos, note TOZOKU are YAKUZA, i.e. the Japanese mafia. Also note Hosaka is looking for Comlink 6.0. From the new employee listing, pick any employee. Edit the record to point to yourself with your BAMA id, 056306118. 28. Connect to Musabori Industries. Sequencer yields the password. Musabori Industries: MUSABORIND, SUBARU Alas, there is no interesting material there. 29. Ask Julius Deane about TOZOKU, and he will provide the link code. Tozoku: YAKUZA 30. Go to the Gentleman Loser, and connect to Tozoku using Sequencer. Tozoku: YAKUZA, YAK The news sections are uninteresting. However, the software library yields Comlink 6.0. Download it. Further, note for later: BlowTorch 1.0: Gentleman Loser, Tozoku Decoder 1.0: Tozoku Hammer 1.0: Gentleman Loser Probe 3.0: Gentleman Loser Disconnect, and delete Comlink 5.0. 31. Connect to Hosaka and upload Comlink 6.0. This yields 7500 credits. 32. Connect to the PAX and read the new messages (nothing interesting). Use the UXB and connect to BOZOBANK, use Sequencer to find there is no password, and open a new account with an initial upload of 1000. Your account number will be 712345450134. In the Of Interest section, note the comment that account siphoning could not happen at Bank of Zurich Orbital. In the message board, you will find a message from Matt Shaw to you noting that some cowboys are missing, and some messages noting the strange dealings of Bank of Zurich Orbital. 33. Connect to JUSTICE, and use Sequencer to find there is no password. There is only a press release with obviously bogus information, and a mention that the lawyer's fees at the Justice Booth are there just so that the defendant does not feel indebted to the lawyer for the (non) services. Also, observe that the code JUSTICE is for Chiba City Central Justice System. 34. Connect to NASA, and use Sequencer to find the password is APOLLO. There are some texts that are mildly amusing, but nothing interesting. 35. Connect to Bank Gemeinschaft and use the password VERBOTEN. Note this grants level 2 access (the other password is EINTRITT, which can be obtained with Sequencer). From the recommended securities, note the existence of several new entities: Bell Europa Maas Biolabs Tessier-Ashpool Allard Technologies (a subsidiary of Tessier-Ashpool) The message board looks rather shady. Note the software library also has Decoder 1.0 (besides e.g. Receipt Forger 7.0). You can download these later. BlowTorch 1.0: Gentleman Loser, Tozoku Decoder 1.0: Bank Gemeinschaft, Tozoku Hammer 1.0: Gentleman Loser Probe 3.0: Gentleman Loser 36. Go to the high-tech zone (tell the security system you work for Hosaka), enter Hosaka, and collect 10000 credits of salary. Make a note of when you do this so, if later in the game a week has gone by, you can go back to Hosaka and collect more salary. 37. Visit Finn at Metro Holografix and ask for wares. Note the following. BlowTorch 1.0: Gentleman Loser, Tozoku, Finn Decoder 1.0: Bank Gemeinschaft, Tozoku, Finn Drill 1.0: Finn Hammer 1.0: Gentleman Loser Probe 3.0: Gentleman Loser Also, note Drill is twice as expensive as BlowTorch and Decoder. Do not get any. 38. Visit Donut World and, using CopTalk, ask for the second level password for the Chiba Tactical Police. The answer is #SNORSKEE, which Cryptology promptly decodes as SUPERTAC. So far, the link code catalog is: Asano Computing: ASANOCOMP, CUSTOMER, #PANCAKE>VENDORS Bank Gemeinschaft: BANKGEMEIN, EINTRITT, #EINHOVEN>VERBOTEN Bank of Zurich: BOZOBANK, no password Cheap Hotel: CHEAPO, GUEST, COCKROACH Chiba City Central Justice System: JUSTICE, no password Chiba Tactical Police: KEISATSU, WARRANTS, #SNORSKEE>SUPERTAC Citizens for a Free Matrix: FREEMATRIX, CFM Consumer Review: CONSUMEREV Eastern Seaboard: EASTSEABOD, LONGISLAND Fuji: FUJI, #DUMBO>ROMCARDS, #ABURAKKOI>UCHIKATSU Gentleman Loser: LOSER, WILSON, LOSER Hitachi: HITACHIBIO Hosaka: HOSAKACORP, #VULCAN>BIOSOFT, FUNGEKI IRS: IRS, TAXINFO Musabori Industries: MUSABORIND, SUBARU NASA: VOYAGER, APOLLO Panthern Moderns: CHAOS, MAINLINE Psychologist: PSYCHO, ? Regular Fellows: REGFELLOW, VISITOR Software Enforcement Agency (SEA): SOFTEN, #SMEEGLDIPO>PERMAFROST Tozoku: YAKUZA, YAK World Chess Federation: WORLDCHESS, NOVICE, MEMBER 39. Go to the Gentleman Loser (of course, one should not endure doing this kind of work at the Cheap Hotel), and connect to the Chiba Tactical Police using the second level password. Edit any warrant and put in Larry Moe and his BAMA id 062788138. 40. Go to Larry's Microsofts, and since Larry is no longer there, go to the meeting room to meet Lupus. Note Lupus will note Matt Shaw said you are good to talk to. Ask Lupus about "bank". He will point out he's been siphoning from account 646328356481 for years. 41. Go back to the Gentleman Loser and connect to Bank Gemeinschaft. Select the transfer option. For the source account, set the account number Lupus provided. Select to transfer 30000 credits. For the destination link code, put in BOZOBANK. For the account number, use yours: 712345450134. 42. Connect to Bank of Zurich Orbital, and download the credits to your chip. 43. Time to go on a shopping spree. Visit Julius Deane and buy the following chips: Psychoanalysis, Phenomenology, Philosophy. You can skip Bargaining because it only helps when buying back body parts when you die, and of course you will never die. Make sure to operate all chips to implant them as you go. Visit Lupus and buy the Evasion chip. Ask Lupus about Sense/Net, he will sell you a pass. This will be useful later. Visit Metro Holografix and buy the Debug and ICE Breaking chips. Visit the Matrix Restaurant, and read the conversation about the ICE. The meaning will become clear soon. Then, buy the Logic, Musicianship, and Software Analysis chips. Buy all the upgrades. If you want to, you can skip Software Analysis because it is only useful to tell more or less what a piece of software does. This is most often already clear from context. 44. Go to Asano's, mention that Crazy Edo calls Anaso a pig, and after bad mouthing Crazy Edo you will get a 20% discount on decks. Buy the Samurai Seven. You can also connect to Consumer Review and first read all the deck reviews for the fun of it, if you like. It will also cost you 200 credits to do that. But really, this is the second best deck, and the best deck is just too expensive right now. Discard the UXB if you like. Incidentally, it appears impossible to buy the Cyberspace VII at this point without skipping some chips or upgrades, or without waiting a week of game time. As you will see later, it does not matter. 45. Go to the Gentleman Loser, use the PAX and read through the news. Note the news about the fried cowboy found at Fuji's cyberjack, that Julius Deane is 138 years old, and the fried hand found at Straylight Villa. You will have to wait until 11/19/58 to see these. 46. You may visit the Citizens for a Free Matrix (provided you do not download any software). 47. Connect to Psychologist, noting the new passwords (the level 2 password is given to you after activating the mind probe, which you should not do out of principle). Psychologist: PSYCHO, NEW MO, BABYLON If you go through the sample notes, you will see one about the Yakuza, then another one from Corto (which as per the actual novel Neuromancer is Armitage), and a last one by Snowman who is describing some of what will happen in cyberspace. There is no need to pay a fee to Psychologist. So, the last link code catalog for this part is: Asano Computing: ASANOCOMP, CUSTOMER, #PANCAKE>VENDORS Bank Gemeinschaft: BANKGEMEIN, EINTRITT, #EINHOVEN>VERBOTEN Bank of Zurich: BOZOBANK, no password Cheap Hotel: CHEAPO, GUEST, COCKROACH Chiba City Central Justice System: JUSTICE, no password Chiba Tactical Police: KEISATSU, WARRANTS, #SNORSKEE>SUPERTAC Citizens for a Free Matrix: FREEMATRIX, CFM Consumer Review: CONSUMEREV Eastern Seaboard: EASTSEABOD, LONGISLAND Fuji: FUJI, #DUMBO>ROMCARDS, #ABURAKKOI>UCHIKATSU Gentleman Loser: LOSER, WILSON, LOSER Hitachi: HITACHIBIO Hosaka: HOSAKACORP, #VULCAN>BIOSOFT, FUNGEKI IRS: IRS, TAXINFO Musabori Industries: MUSABORIND, SUBARU NASA: VOYAGER, APOLLO Panthern Moderns: CHAOS, MAINLINE Psychologist: PSYCHO, NEW MO, BABYLON Regular Fellows: REGFELLOW, VISITOR Software Enforcement Agency (SEA): SOFTEN, #SMEEGLDIPO>PERMAFROST Tozoku: YAKUZA, YAK World Chess Federation: WORLDCHESS, NOVICE, MEMBER Also, for completeness, here is a catalog of BAMA IDs. You should have about 12000 credits left. Part II: Cyberspace Zone 0. Getting to a database in cyberspace results in encountering ICE, a form of database protection that will reject intruders such as you. General ICE breaking advice. Activating the ICE breaking skill makes dealing with the ICE easier. This is especially noticeable as the game progresses. You must use the skill before you start battling the ICE for the skill to sharpen. Each time you break into a database in a new cyberspace zone, the skill will increase by one. So, activating this skill is the first thing you should do. When encountering ICE, you may send in a probe first (this will reveal what database it is, and a few details on ICE or the AI), but at the end of the day it is a waste of time. The standard procedure is to first send in a program that slows down the ICE, if you have any. Then, send in a virus. And finally, attack the ICE with the ICE breaking software (replenishing the virus if it runs out --- you can tell by the change of color). Later on you will have software that jams the ICE, i.e. Jammies. Use these programs as many times as their version number if they stop affect the ICE, because even if you do not have a chance to slot in an extra attack, you give the virus more time to take effect and weaken the ICE. Each time you use an ICE breaking software, it lessens its effect on the ICE as well. So, for instance, if you use BlowTorch 3.0, the next time it behaves as if it were BlowTorch 2.0. Further, ICE breaking software seems to be organized in levels, like this: Level 1: BlowTorch, Decoder, Hammer Level 2: Drill, Doorstop Level 3: DepthCharge, LogicBomb, Concrete To estimate the initial relative impact on the ICE, multiply the level by the software version. So, Hammer 4.0 would have the same impact as Drill 2.0 on first use. With this information in mind, you can now schedule which software to attack the ICE with to maximize impact on the ICE. For convenience, the optimum attack order will be noted throughout. Incidentally, this explains why Drill was more expensive at Finn's. Besides the ICE, some bases also have an AI. For the AI battles, the four important skills are Sophistry, Phenomenology, Logic, and Philosophy. Most AIs have a weakness, which can be found via the skill Psychoanalysis. So, first send in the weakness skill, then rotate through the skills as you would with the ICE as explained above. If you do not use Psychoanalysis with each AI, then that skill will not develop. As you may have read at the Matrix Restaurant conversation, all AIs have an electronic shotgun pointed to their heads. In other words, AIs are vulnerable to being killed by a program that the Turing Registry keeps. This bit of information will become useful later. All such battles are best had with the keyboard controls. Recall to issue a keyboard command before the effect of your last action comes to pass, doing this maximizes the throughput of your actions. Recall the ICE breaking program locations (excluding Probe): BlowTorch 1.0: Gentleman Loser, Tozoku, Finn Decoder 1.0: Bank Gemeinschaft, Tozoku, Finn Drill 1.0: Finn Hammer 1.0: Gentleman Loser 1. To avoid paying Finn for Drill, there is the hard route. Go to the Cheap Hotel and download two copies of BlowTorch, Decoder, and Hammer. You will need multiple copies because, if the ICE starts chipping away at your deck's armor and succeeds in breaking through, the software will become bugged and unusable --- by having two copies, you minimize the chance that an ICE breaking ware will become unavailable at the worst possible moment. Side comment: after the armor is gone, the ICE and the AIs will affect your own composition. If they manage to fry you out, then you die. Just so you know. Since all the ICE breaking programs downloaded so far belong to Level 1, the order in which they are used does not matter so long as you cycle through them. 2. From the Cheap Hotel, use Comlink 6.0 and enter cyberspace. You will be in Zone 0. Without that EasyRider program, logging into a zone gives access to the bases within the same zone. So, since Cheap Hotel is in Zone 0, only bases in Zone 0 will be accessible here. For the sake of completeness, here is a map in terms of zone, x, y. 0, 16, 112: Asano's 0, 32, 64: Consumer Review 0, 96, 32: Psychologist 0, 112, 112: Cheap Hotel 0, 160, 80: World Chess Federation 0, 208, 32: Regular Fellows 0, 224, 112: Panther Moderns Also for the sake of completeness, this will visit all databases. So, once in cyberspace, move towards Cheap Hotel and proceed to break the ICE. This should result in logging into the Cheap Hotel at level 2 without requiring a password. After noting nothing of interest, exit the database. You should be back in cyberspace. If the deck needs repairs or the software needs debugging, then exit cyberspace to address these problems then log back in. If your composition needs improvement, exit cyberspace and just wait until you recover. Right now, the optimum attack strategy for ICE breaking is just to cycle through Decoder, Hammer, and BlowTorch. That is, Decoder 1.0@1x1, Hammer 1.0@1x1, BlowTorch 1.0@1x1 The 1x1 notation refers to the effect of the software on the ICE (in this case, they are all 1), times the level of the ICE breaking software (these are all level 1 ICE breakers). 3. Next, go to Asano's. After breaking the ICE, note Asano's has 3 levels. However, there is nothing of interest here either. 4. Next, go to Consumer Review. There are 2 levels. This database has nothing of interest either. 5. Next, go to Regular Fellows. There are 2 levels, but still nothing of interest. 6. Next, go to Panther Moderns. There are 2 levels. In the software library, you will find better programs. Download 2 copies (and later delete the old ones). Also, you will note a program called ThunderHead, this is a virus. Unlike ICE breaking programs, viruses are single use. So, download 4 copies. BlowTorch 3.0: Panther Moderns Decoder 2.0: Panther Moderns Drill 1.0: Finn Hammer 1.0: Gentleman Loser ThunderHead 1.0: Panther Moderns There is also this program called Cyberspace 1.0, however it just saves one from selecting the cyberspace option in Comlink 6.0. Deck space is better used for other things, so skip downloading it. This time, exit cyberspace, and delete obsolete ICE breaking programs. With the new software, it is time to update the optimum attack strategy. The notation here is version @ current effect x level. The product of these three should be in decreasing order. ThunderHead 1.0, BlowTorch 3.0@3x1, BlowTorch 3.0@2x1, Decoder 2.0@2x1, Hammer 1.0@1x1, BlowTorch 3.0@1x1, Decoder 2.0@1x1. 7. Go back to cyberspace and enter Psychologist. After breaking the ICE, you will encounter the first AI, called Chrome. The Psychoanalysis skill reveals its weakness is Philosophy. So, use the Philosophy skill first, then rotate Logic, Sophistry, Phenomenology, and Philosophy. If you get low on vitality, use the skill Zen (you can use it twice because your Zen skill level is 2). If it is still going badly, use Evasion to stop the encounter (provided you have Evasion, which at this point you do unless you have opted to be brave and buy that from Lupus later). But, you should be able to break in and enter the Psychologist database. There are 3 levels. The software library has a Thunderhead, get a copy to replenish the one used against the ICE. ThunderHead 1.0: Panther Moderns, Psychologist By the way, once an AI is defeated, it will no longer appear. Also, Zen does not work outside of a cyberspace AI battle. 8. Exit cyberspace, fix the likely broken programs. Then, re-enter cyberspace and go to the World Chess Federation. You will encounter an AI and its weakness is Logic. After defeating it, you will see this database has 3 levels. In the software library, you will find BattleChess 4.0, download it for later (it's not what it seems). Also, there is an AI message buffer. Apparently, this AI was called Morphy. Greystoke, another AI, is concerned that the program that will destroy it is missing from the Turing vault. Apparently, the AIs are competing against each other, as Greystoke and Neuromancer are in different factions. The next message is from Hal, and notes an AI called Phantom is also interested in chess. Exit cyberspace, and fix up the deck. This concludes Part II: Cyberspace Zone 0. Part III: Cyberspace at Chiba City. 1. Go to the Gentleman Loser and enter cyberspace. This is Zone 1, and in it you will find: 1, 272, 64: IRS 1, 288, 112: Chiba Tactical Police 1, 320, 32: Copenhaguen University 1, 352, 64: Software Enforcement Agency 1, 352, 112: Citizens for a Free Matrix 1, 384, 32: Eastern Seaboard 1, 416, 64: Gentleman Loser 1, 416, 112: Chiba City Central Justice System 1, 448, 32: NASA 1, 480, 80: Tozoku 2. Break into Gentleman Loser. It may be a bit challenging without Drill, but it is perfectly possible. You will enter at level 3. At the software library, this time you will find Slow, Injector, and Drill. The Software Analysis skill will identify Injector as a virus, so download several. Also keep two copies of Drill. One copy of Slow will suffice. BlowTorch 3.0: Panther Moderns Decoder 2.0: Panther Moderns Drill 1.0: Gentleman Loser Hammer 1.0: Gentleman Loser Injector 1.0: Gentleman Loser ThunderHead 1.0: Panther Moderns Slow 1.0: Gentleman Loser Finn is no longer a source, and he has not received a cent. With the new software, there is a new optimum attack sequence. The generic term Virus indicates to send in some virus program. Slow 1.0, Virus, BlowTorch 3.0@3x1, BlowTorch 3.0@2x1, Drill 1.0@1x2, Decoder 2.0@2x1, Hammer 1.0@1x1, BlowTorch 3.0@1x1, Decoder 2.0@1x1. 3. Break into Tozoku, you will reach level 2. Going through the messages, you will see some explanation regarding the Instanails case. Also, note the code for Bank of Zurich Orbital, and what is P. d'Argent doing, sending messages to the Yakuza? In the job openings, note the request for people to break into Hosaka, and a woman to seduce an executive at Musabori, and some other lovely "jobs". At the software library, you will find Drill 2.0 (so much for Finn), and another virus called Acid. Download copies as usual, repair your deck and software. BlowTorch 3.0: Panther Moderns, Tozoku Decoder 2.0: Panther Moderns Drill 2.0: Tozoku Hammer 1.0: Gentleman Loser Acid 1.0: Tozoku Injector 1.0: Gentleman Loser ThunderHead 1.0: Panther Moderns Slow 1.0: Gentleman Loser New optimum attack sequence. Slow 1.0, Virus, Drill 2.0@2x2, BlowTorch 3.0@3x1, BlowTorch 3.0@2x1, Drill 2.0@1x2, Decoder 2.0@2x1, Hammer 1.0@1x1, BlowTorch 3.0@1x1, Decoder 2.0@1x1. 4. Break into the Chiba City Central Justice System, reaching level 2. There is not much of interest, other than some BAMA ids that do not seem useful. 5. Break into the IRS, reaching level 3. You may want to go over the Field Supervisor's Notice regarding the public IRS message board. There is no special audit. Finally, at the software library, you will find more programs. BlowTorch 3.0: Panther Moderns, Tozoku Decoder 2.0: Panther Moderns Drill 2.0: Tozoku Hammer 2.0: IRS Acid 1.0: Tozoku Injector 1.0: Gentleman Loser ThunderHead 1.0: Panther Moderns Jammies 1.0: IRS Slow 1.0: Gentleman Loser Mimic 1.0: IRS Replace the 1.0 versions of Hammer with 2.0 versions. There is also Jammies, which temporarily stuns the ICE. But, at version 1.0, it is not worth the trouble. Further, there is another program called Mimic (which pretends to be a security audit in order to skip past the ICE, a so called "bypass" program --- but it doesn't always work, so you might as well ignore it). New optimum attack sequence. Slow 1.0, Virus, Drill 2.0@2x2, BlowTorch 3.0@3x1, BlowTorch 3.0@2x1, Drill 2.0@1x2, Decoder 2.0@2x1, Hammer 2.0@2x1, Hammer 2.0@1x1, BlowTorch 3.0@1x1, Decoder 2.0@1x1. 6. Break into the Chiba Tactical Police, reaching level 2. There is nothing of interest there. Incidentally, you may want to see how breaking this ICE is easier when using the ICE breaking skill compared to breaking in without it. One way in which this manifests is that stronger ICE breaking skills means your actions are performed faster in relation to those of the ICE, which gives the attacker a substantial advantage. 7. Break into the Software Enforcement Agency, reaching level 2. From the software library, replenish virus copies by downloading ThunderHead 2.0. BlowTorch 3.0: Panther Moderns, Tozoku Decoder 2.0: Panther Moderns Drill 2.0: Tozoku Hammer 2.0: IRS Acid 1.0: Tozoku Injector 1.0: Gentleman Loser ThunderHead 2.0: Software Enforcement Agency Jammies 1.0: IRS Slow 1.0: Gentleman Loser Mimic 1.0: IRS From the skill upgrade, improve CopTalk to level 4. 8. Go to Donut World and use CopTalk to see what you can now do. Apparently, Finnegan has vanished while working undercover in cyberspace, and that is about as much as you will get from CopTalk 4. Incidentally, Zone's girl responds the same way to CopTalk 4 as with CopTalk 2. 9. Back into cyberspace at the Gentleman Loser, break into the Eastern Seaboard which will yield level 2. The only interesting bit is that you can also get ThunderHead 2.0 from here. BlowTorch 3.0: Panther Moderns, Tozoku Decoder 2.0: Panther Moderns Drill 2.0: Tozoku Hammer 2.0: IRS Acid 1.0: Tozoku Injector 1.0: Gentleman Loser ThunderHead 2.0: Eastern Seaboard, Software Enforcement Agency Jammies 1.0: IRS Slow 1.0: Gentleman Loser Mimic 1.0: IRS 10. Break into Citizens for a Free Matrix. You will find an AI called Sapphire with a weakness for Sophistry. Note this AI is aligned with Greystoke. Looking over the AI buffers, apparently there is a deck protection program. You should have to repair your deck and programs, so clean up. 11. Break into NASA, you will find another AI called HAL with a weakness for Logic. Reaching level 2, you will find a neat software library. BlowTorch 4.0: NASA Decoder 4.0: NASA Drill 2.0: Tozoku Hammer 2.0: IRS Acid 1.0: Tozoku Injector 1.0: Gentleman Loser Python 2.0: NASA ThunderHead 2.0: Eastern Seaboard, Software Enforcement Agency Jammies 1.0: IRS Slow 1.0: Gentleman Loser Mimic 1.0: IRS Upgrade BlowToch and Decoder, then download some copies of Python 2.0, another virus. Clean up the deck as usual. New optimum attack sequence. Slow 1.0, Virus, Drill 2.0@2x2, BlowTorch 4.0@4x1, Decoder 4.0@4x1, BlowTorch 4.0@3x1, Decoder 4.0@3x1, Drill 2.0@1x2, Hammer 2.0@2x1, BlowTorch 4.0@2x1, Decoder 4.0@2x1. 12. Break into Copenhaguen University, reaching level 2. The academic notes evidently have it all wrong, but note again the mention of Tessier-Ashpool and Allard Technologies. The alum news have nothing of interest. Along the messages, there is one for you re: Sumdiv Kid being gone. Finally, a message noting the ranking of ICE breaking programs. Good: Decoder, BlowTorch, Hammer Better: DoorStop, Drill Best: Concrete, DepthCharge, LogicBomb In the software library, you will find DoorStop. BlowTorch 4.0: NASA Decoder 4.0: NASA Hammer 2.0: IRS DoorStop 1.0: Copenhaguen University Drill 2.0: Tozoku Acid 1.0: Tozoku Injector 1.0: Gentleman Loser Python 2.0: NASA ThunderHead 2.0: Eastern Seaboard, Software Enforcement Agency Jammies 1.0: IRS, Copenhaguen University Slow 1.0: Gentleman Loser Mimic 1.0: IRS Clean up the deck, and delete Hammer 2.0 because it is the weakest of the ICE breaking programs so far. Nothing else can be reached from the Gentleman Loser, so it is time to go somewhere else. New optimum attack sequence. Slow 1.0, Virus, Drill 2.0@2x2, BlowTorch 4.0@4x1, Decoder 4.0@4x1, BlowTorch 4.0@3x1, Decoder 4.0@3x1, Drill 2.0@1x2, DoorStop 1.0@1x2, BlowTorch 4.0@2x1, Decoder 4.0@2x1. 13. Go to the Hosaka office, which of course is possible since it is your job. Unfortunately, it is very likely a week will not have elapsed yet. 14. Connect to cyberspace. Note this is Zone 2, with the following databases in it. 2, 32, 192: Hitachi Biotech 2, 112, 240: Fuji 2, 144, 160: Hosaka Corporation 2, 208, 208: ? Given the layout of the hi-tech zone, the last database should be Musabori. 15. Break into Hosaka, reaching level 3. It will be hard, but do not despair. From the software library, you will find several goodies. Upgrade as usual. If you have too many viruses, it may take a couple break ins to completely upgrade the deck. So, start the process with no more than 4 viruses. BlowTorch 4.0: NASA Decoder 4.0: NASA Hammer 4.0: Hosaka DoorStop 1.0: Copenhaguen University Drill 2.0: Tozoku Concrete 1.0: Hosaka Acid 1.0: Tozoku Injector 2.0: Hosaka Python 2.0: NASA ThunderHead 2.0: Eastern Seaboard, Software Enforcement Agency Jammies 1.0: IRS, Copenhaguen University Slow 2.0: Hosaka Mimic 2.0: Hosaka New optimum attack sequence. Slow 2.0, Virus, Drill 2.0@2x2, BlowTorch 4.0@4x1, Decoder 4.0@4x1, Hammer 4.0@4x1, Concrete 1.0@1x3, BlowTorch 4.0@3x1, Decoder 4.0@3x1, Drill 2.0@1x2, DoorStop 1.0@1x2, BlowTorch 4.0@2x1, Decoder 4.0@2x1. 16. Break into Hitachi, reaching level 2. There is not much of interest. 17. Break into Fuji, reaching level 2. There is not much of interest. 18. The database at 2, 208, 208 has an AI with an unknown vulnerability, so use the Evasion skill to get out of there in one piece. By the way, you may visit the offices of Fuji, Hosaka, Musabori, and Hitachi (so long as you do not get the artificial lungs), but nothing much happens. Also, it is not necessary. Pass on visiting Sense/Net for now, as there are some preparations to be made first. There is nowhere else to go other than to the space port, and out of Chiba City. This concludes Part III: Cyberspace at Chiba City. Part IV: Freeside and Zion Cluster. 1. Go to the Space Port and get a ticket to the Zion Cluster. 2. You encounter an interesting fellow that appears to talk nonsense. Note he mentions banks, so ask him about banks. And when he asks which, ask him about Gemeinschaft. He says something about BG1066 getting through the front door. 3. Trying to get to Freeside is problematic because there is no shuttle. But, since the guy is listening to dub, then use your Musicianship skill and play dub. He sends you to Freeside with Maelcum in his tug. Apparently he knows nothing, but you may want to ask him about "cyberspace", "maelcum", or "zion". You can also play more dub. Not much happens. If you ask about a jack, it turns out it burned when Case was there. 4. After arriving at Freeside, you will note the following layout. Shuttle Straylight Space Bank of Bank Villa Port Berne Gemeinschaft 5. Go to the Bank of Berne and ask to open an account. Insist you have the money. Eventually the receptionist goes away. Go into the manager's office. 6. There is no manager but there is a cyberspace jack, so enter cyberspace. You reach Zone 3. 3, 336, 160: Bank of Berne 3, 464, 160: Screaming Fist 3, 288, 208: Free Sex Union 3, 336, 240: D.A.R.P.O. 3, 432, 240: Turing Registry 7. Break into Screaming Fist. It is difficult, but doable. Note Screaming Fist is regulated by the department of defense. First, the operational reports finally explain that Corto is Armitage, and provide a background story for Corto that more or less follows the actual book Neuromancer. In the software library, there are many useful things. BlowTorch 4.0: NASA Decoder 4.0: NASA Hammer 4.0: Hosaka DoorStop 1.0: Copenhaguen University Drill 2.0: Tozoku Concrete 1.0: Hosaka DepthCharge 3.0: Screaming First Acid 1.0: Tozoku Injector 2.0: Hosaka Python 3.0: Screaming Fist ThunderHead 2.0: Eastern Seaboard, Software Enforcement Agency Jammies 1.0: IRS, Copenhaguen University Slow 3.0: Screaming Fist Mimic 2.0: Hosaka ArmorAll 1.0: Screaming Fist EasyRider 1.0: Screaming Fist KGB 1.0: Screaming Fist It may take a few trips to fully upgrade the deck. In the mean time, ArmorAll replenishes the deck's armor when it runs out (again, you get as many uses as the version number). EasyRider, as explained earlier, allows to travel through cyberspace zones without restriction. This means it is no longer necessary to physically travel to access different cyberspace zones. Just use the program after connecting to cyberspace. KGB sends you to the KGB database. While with EasyRider this is easy to do, the point is that KGB works even when fighting the ICE. So, KGB allows you to break off from an ICE battle, much like Evasion allows escape from AI battle. Upgrade all virus copies to Python 3.0. New optimum attack sequence. Slow 3.0, Virus, DepthCharge 3.0@3x3, DepthCharge 3.0@2x3, Drill 2.0@2x2, BlowTorch 4.0@4x1, Decoder 4.0@4x1, Hammer 4.0@4x1, Concrete 1.0@1x3, DepthCharge 3.0@1x3, BlowTorch 4.0@3x1, Decoder 4.0@3x1, Drill 2.0@1x2, DoorStop 1.0@1x2, BlowTorch 4.0@2x1, Decoder 4.0@2x1. 8. Break into the Free Sex Union. The AI, Xaviera, is weak at Phenomenology. It will be difficult, but it can be done. There is nothing much of interest at the database, except for messages related to Xaviera's tendencies. 9. Break into D.A.R.P.O. From the research topics, you find that ICE stands for Intrusion Countermeasure Electronics. In the software library, there are many upgrades. It may take a number of rounds to fully upgrade the deck. BlowTorch 4.0: NASA Decoder 4.0: NASA Hammer 4.0: Hosaka DoorStop 1.0: Copenhaguen University Drill 3.0: D.A.R.P.O. Concrete 2.0: D.A.R.P.O. DepthCharge 3.0: Screaming First Acid 1.0: Tozoku Injector 3.0: D.A.R.P.O. Python 3.0: Screaming Fist ThunderHead 3.0: D.A.R.P.O. Jammies 2.0: D.A.R.P.O. Slow 3.0: Screaming Fist Mimic 2.0: Hosaka ArmorAll 1.0: Screaming Fist EasyRider 1.0: Screaming Fist KGB 1.0: Screaming Fist New optimum attack sequence. Slow 3.0, Virus, Jammies 2.0, DepthCharge 3.0@3x3, DepthCharge 3.0@2x3, Concrete 2.0@2x3, Drill 3.0@3x2, Drill 3.0@2x2, BlowTorch 4.0@4x1, Decoder 4.0@4x1, Hammer 4.0@4x1, Concrete 2.0@1x3, DepthCharge 3.0@1x3, BlowTorch 4.0@3x1, Decoder 4.0@3x1, Drill 3.0@1x2, DoorStop 1.0@1x2. Sending in Jammies can also give you time to use ArmorAll without letting the ICE make progress against you. Meanwhile, every time the ICE is not making progress, the virus will be making progress against it, which works in your favor. However, each time you use Jammies, the next use will have less effect, and Jammies 1.0 is a waste of time. 10. Break into the Turing Registry. Note the AI registry as follows. By now, the ones marked with * have been defeated. Neuromancer 918724597 Wintermute 714555681 Greystoke 111957245 * Chrome 927084445 * Sapphire 222598544 * Hal 900041583 Colossus 508923754 * Xaviera 818905987 Lucifer 374893629 Sangfroid 657345405 Gold 230007467 From the reports, you will find that two of the Turing Registry shotgun programs are now missing from their vaults. Further, one of the AIs has apparently managed to alter reality. Apparently you can upgrade your AI skills to level 5 at this database, but it is unnecessary if you have been following the plan outlined here. 11. Break into the Bank of Berne. You will run into the AI Gold, with a weakness of Philosophy. Once in the bank, the software library does not have much of interest except Probe 10.0. In the message board, you will also find a message from the Administration with the authorization code LYMA1211MARZ, to be used with account number 121519831200. Use this information to transfer 500000 credits to your Bank of Zurich Orbital account 712345450134. This completes Zone 3. 12. Go into the vault of Bank Gemeinschaft using the code BG1066. Interesting to see the vault. However, note that with EasyRider, whether this cyberjack connects to one zone or another is immaterial. 13. For the fun of it, go to Villa Straylight. Note your composition will decrease as you stay there. So, after listening to the deranged mess the statue will say, leave. 14. Take a shuttle back to Chiba City. This concludes Part IV: Freeside and Zion Cluster. Part V: Exploration of Cyberspace. 1. Delete all copies of Hammer 4.0 and a copy of BlowTorch 4.0 to make room. New optimum attack sequence. Slow 3.0, Virus, Jammies 2.0, DepthCharge 3.0@3x3, DepthCharge 3.0@2x3, Concrete 2.0@2x3, Drill 3.0@3x2, Drill 3.0@2x2, BlowTorch 4.0@4x1, Decoder 4.0@4x1, Concrete 2.0@1x3, DepthCharge 3.0@1x3, BlowTorch 4.0@3x1, Decoder 4.0@3x1, Drill 3.0@1x2, DoorStop 1.0@1x2. 2. Go to the Gentleman Loser (because it is a nice place to hack from), go to cyberspace. From now on, use EasyRider to move freely between zones --- and for convenience, note that the coordinates wrap around at 512. Zone 4 contains the following databases. 4, 48, 320: Sense/Net 4, 160, 320: Gridpoint 3. Break into Gridpoint (note it will be difficult). In the messages, you will note mentions of Python 6.0 and Slow 3.0. Also, Bosch appears to be missing, and note Matt Shaw's comments. Also the comments re: Bosch being with a wife of a jealous man. Nevertheless, Matt Shaw's last comments are unanswered. The Look Out comments are not that interesting given the knowledge obtained so far. Update your deck from the Software Library. It may take a few trips. You may want to keep only one copy of the weaker ICE breakers to make room. BlowTorch 4.0: NASA Decoder 4.0: NASA Hammer 5.0: Gridpoint DoorStop 1.0: Copenhaguen University Drill 3.0: D.A.R.P.O. Concrete 2.0: D.A.R.P.O. DepthCharge 3.0: Screaming First Acid 1.0: Tozoku Injector 3.0: D.A.R.P.O., Gridpoint Python 3.0: Screaming Fist ThunderHead 3.0: D.A.R.P.O., Gridpoint Jammies 3.0: Gridpoint Slow 3.0: Screaming Fist Mimic 2.0: Hosaka ArmorAll 2.0: Gridpoint EasyRider 1.0: Screaming Fist KGB 1.0: Screaming Fist New optimum attack sequence. Slow 3.0, Virus, Jammies 3.0, DepthCharge 3.0@3x3, DepthCharge 3.0@2x3, Concrete 2.0@2x3, Drill 3.0@3x2, Hammer 5.0@5x1, Drill 3.0@2x2, BlowTorch 4.0@4x1, Decoder 4.0@4x1, Hammer 5.0@4x1, Concrete 2.0@1x3, DepthCharge 3.0@1x3, BlowTorch 4.0@3x1, Decoder 4.0@3x1, Drill 3.0@1x2, DoorStop 1.0@1x2. Note that you should send in Jammies 3.0 again when the ICE breaks loose from the first invocation of Jammies 3.0. By the time Jammies 3.0 would behave like Jammies 1.0, it is actually a waste of time to send in Jammies again. Using Jammies again is an excellent time to use ArmorAll. 4. Break into Sense/Net. You will note this is a ROM construct vault catalog. Go through the catalog with care: only the first selection will be available for pickup, so pick the Dixie Flatline with code #0467839. Note only the code shows up for any selection. Also, only select the ROM construct once. Exit cyberspace. 5. Go to the hi-tech zone and enter Sense/Net. Give the Security Pass to the computer. Then, ask for ROM construct 0467839, and the computer will give you the ROM construct. It will be installed without having to do anything further. 6. Go back to the Gentleman Loser, and use the PAX terminal to view the latest messages and news. You will see a general description of what a ROM construct does. From the ROM construct menu, you will see that it also comes with a Software Analysis skill, which now you do not have to buy even out of curiosity. 7. Enter cyberspace. Go to Zone 5, which contains the following databases. 5, 336, 368: Bank of Zurich 5, 384, 288: Bell Europa 5, 416, 368: Nihilist 5, 448, 320: I.N.S.A. By the way, something the ROM construct affords in cyberspace is the ability to debug programs without disconnecting. Since debugging takes zero time even while breaking the ICE, this means it is no longer necessary to keep program duplicates. So, clean up the deck. Also, the ROM construct may have useful suggestions as to how to proceed if you turn on monitor mode. Ideally, the ROM construct could have provided a program duplicator so the virus supply would also be unlimited. Alas, no such luck. 8. Break into Bank of Zurich. Unfortunately there is nothing of interest. 9. Break into Bell Europa. Be warned that this may be difficult. Download Thunderhead 4.0 and Acid 5.0. BlowTorch 4.0: NASA Decoder 4.0: NASA Hammer 5.0: Gridpoint DoorStop 1.0: Copenhaguen University Drill 3.0: D.A.R.P.O. Concrete 2.0: D.A.R.P.O. Break into Nihilist. You will note a rather interesting set of texts regarding nihilism and why certain useful software is available here. Upgrade the deck as usual. BlowTorch 4.0: NASA Decoder 4.0: NASA Hammer 5.0: Gridpoint DoorStop 1.0: Copenhaguen University Drill 3.0: D.A.R.P.O. Concrete 2.0: D.A.R.P.O. Break into I.N.S.A. From the data transfer logs, note the existence of Mitsubishi bank, and another mention of COMSAT. As a side comment, observe that the Panther Moderns are exchanging funds with Musabori. Update your Cryptology skill to level 4. The software library has substantial upgrades. Go to Zone 6, which contains the following databases. 6, 112, 416: KGB 6, 112, 480: Maas Biolabs 13. Break into the KGB (might as well use the KGB 1.0 program). Note that any impact by this ICE at this point will take out all shielding as well as your composition in one go, so be careful. Of course, you cannot use KGB to evade the ICE here. After breaking the ICE, you will encounter an AI called Lucifer, with a weakness of Logic. Once in the database, note the ominous warning about AIs being up to no good. The software library has a multitude of useful upgrades. BlowTorch 4.0: NASA Decoder 4.0: NASA Hammer 6.0: I.N.S.A. DoorStop 4.0: I.N.S.A. Drill 3.0: D.A.R.P.O. With Jammies 4.0, it is possible to use Jammies 4.0, hit the ICE a couple times, then use Jammies again (with the effect of Jammies 3.0), hit the ICE again, and only then use ArmorAll after sending in Jammies a third time. Furthermore, when you gain the last ICE breaking skill level, you may be able to hit the ICE thrice after Jammies 4.0, then twice after sending Jammies again, and so on. You will have to experiment a bit to find the optimum sequence that minimizes ICE hits on you. Note that only DepthCharge, LogicBomb, Concrete, and DoorStop are necessary now. So, delete all the other ICE breaking programs to clean up the deck. 14. Break into Maas Biolabs. After breaking the ICE, you will find an AI called Sangfroid with a weakness of Phenomenology. Once in the database, you will find a description of a superdeck called CyberEyes. Also, note that Maas Biolabs has a virus security system that will have to be dealt with even if the alarm is disabled. Finally, from the security systems option, disable the alarm and unlock the door to Maas Biolabs. 15. Visit Julius Deane, ask about hardware, and buy the gas mask. Once back on the street, operate the gas mask. 16. Enter Maas Biolabs. The gas mask confuses the computer, which asks to implant the CyberEyes. State you are the test subject, and get the CyberEyes implanted. This gives you the ability to store up to 32 programs. Discard the Samurai Seven (this illustrates that getting the Cyberspace VII was unnecessary). For the sake of thoroughness, do not forget to operate the gas mask again once outside Maas Biolabs to take the mask off. 17. Back in the Gentleman Loser, go to Zone 7 which has the following databases. 7, 320, 464: Phantom 7, 384, 416: Tessier-Ashpool 7, 432, 464: Allard Technologies 18. Visit Phantom. After breaking the ICE, just give BattleChess 4.0 to the AI, and it will let you through (note the AI does not attack you, and that its weakness is Logic). If you read the notes, besides a rather strange explanation of who Phantom is, you will see this database has Greystoke's kill program. Download Hemlock 1.0. Break into Tessier-Ashpool. After breaking the ICE, you will find an AI called Wintermute with a weakness of Sophistry. Once in the database, you will find a semiotics essay on Tessier and Ashpool, somewhat explaining the symbology of Straylight Villa. In the AI message buffer, you will see how Greystoke and Neuromancer are fighting each other for control. 20. Break into Musabori, and once past the ICE (which is now trivial) defeat Greystoke by using the kill program Hemlock. Once in the database, read through the AI message buffer and see a note about how you are a real problem for the AIs. From the software library, download Kuang Eleven 1.0. If you visit the World Chess Federation, you will see you still cannot play a new daily tournament. 21. Break into Allard Technologies. Once past the ICE, you will encounter Neuromancer. At first, it will put you in a beach prison reminiscent of Straylight Villa in that it is a fantasy that drains your composition. Note that Neuromancer also reveals he was Matt Shaw. Use your AI fighting skills three times to break away from the beach. Send in Kuang Eleven, then defeat Neuromancer with your AI skills.
